                                                                                         URGENT ACTION ITEM!
                                                                          ELECTION REFORM IN CRUCIAL PHASE!

For weeks, election reform activists have been waiting for Rep. Rush Holt to unveil the new version of his former HR 550 bill which, last Congressional session, included highly objectionable proposals such as adding printers to electronic voting machines (which were designed for fraud); unacceptably low audit amounts; and empowering the partisan Election Assistance Commission (EAC) whose members are selected by President Bush.

Previews of the new version of this bill indicate it still concentrates on technology standards for elections, not democracy standards! The problem is, this bill has more co-sponsors (around 190) than any other proposed election reform legislation. Unless they are STOPPED RIGHT NOW, Congress may ram this bill through WITHIN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, and consider election fraud issues solved! That is why we need YOUR HELP NOW!

We urgently ask that you one or more of the actions listed below, delivering the message suggested here:

ACTIONS:

1. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT with the legislative aide to your Congressional representative at their home office in your state and personally go in 
    & see them.
2. MAKE A PHONE APPOINTMENT with that aide to discuss the issue
3. WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR to your local paper or CALL IN to local talk shows to discuss the issue.

THREE DEMANDS TO MAKE!

1. HALT HOLT! We absolutely CANNOT ALLOW THIS “ELECTION REFORM BILL” TO PASS! Congress, in its haste, is about to make one of the most critical and most expensive blunders in history, all because they are RUSHING INTO ACTION WITHOUT KNOWING THE FACTS!
2. WE MUST HAVE Congressional hearings that include citizen input to study true solutions to election fraud, including studying implementation of safely executed hand-counted paper ballots elections. Both types of computers used to cast AND count votes (touchscreens, or DREs) and Optical Scan counters) have been proven to be easily hacked and manipulated. We must have clean election systems in place by 2008!
3. CITIZENS who request them must have ACCESS TO ELECTION RECORDS and ballots through Freedom of Information Act in a timely, affordable fashion, with no withholding of data due to “trade secret” or “proprietary information” claims of voting machine vendors. Records must be delivered timely so that their review can impact election results, if applicable, BEFORE election results are certified and the (incorrect) candidate takes office.
